Welcome to MEfA Montessori!!

A message from our Head of School:

Welcome to the MEfA Montessori website - we hope you will enjoy exploring it

I have been thinking a lot recently about our children who have great powers of association; every train of thought in an active mind has its active connection with some others. For example, a chance word overheard in the conversation of older children/adults can awaken a whole set of associations in the younger child. The Montessori sensorial materials have as their aim the development of keen perceptions which in their turn will provoke observation, association and generalisation. The biological effect of this sensory training is in the developing of the association centres in the cortex of the brain and the nerve fibres connecting them; and the psychological effect is the change from the instinctive impulsive life of elementary consciousness to the higher conceptual life of the fully developed mentality.

For families
Research shows that very early indications of learning difficulties are best resolved by interventions at an early age.

Most parents attend our classes with their children - as a result they are in a very good position to reflect on our activities and develop similar opportunities at home.

IN FOCUS

Our Forest School

Our Forest School and Well-being Garden, which is situated immediately behind Montessori House, on Siebert Road, was partially funded by a grant from the Neighbourhood Growth Fund in early 2019.

Our lovely landlord, Ben, rebuilt the yellow brick wall and fence, and refurbished and reroofed the garage area which is now our ‘Discovery Room’. One of our fathers, Marius from Geo Contracts, was contracted to build the dividing fence, kit out the Discovery Room and build the Montessori Hut in the yard.

Everyone got involved in developing the garden and forest areas; parents, teachers, trustees and students raked 1000 litres of wood chip, which was swung into the yard by crane! They rolled out and secured the grassy areas, laid the forest floor complete with fir cones, the beach and the tadpole pond.

They also built the ‘tree pits’ – lovely wooden benches which surround our trees, some of which have been sponsored (we have other trees still open for sponsorship!).

The children played as we worked and we noticed that they wanted to get involved with tools, especially hammers, to wheelbarrow wood chip and compost around, ride on the trolley and really loved ‘working’ with their parents.

Throughout the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, the environment provided an inviting and nurturing safe space for individual families who visited - this became especially meaningful and worthwhile for families without gardens.

In September 2021 we took possession of a beautiful cedar wood greenhouse, funded by a further grant from the Neighbourhood Growth Fund. This enabled us to provide many more opportunities for sowing vegetable and flower seeds, watching them germinate, planting them out and enjoying the plants as they matured.

Now, in 2023, our Forest School and Well-being Garden plays an integral role in the everyday living and learning of our families and community. We have two designated Forest School sessions per week and many ad hoc visits which enhance the educational opportunities we can offer. Come and see us!
